The debut from the second coming of Mellows is being co-released by our pals at Royal Rhino Flying Records (who also do stuff w/ da fabulous GOBBLE GOBBLE) and ourselves-Tweaking Trays.  We're doing a limited 500 copy run of the 7" on August 21st and can be pre-ordered from Royal Rhino Flying here!

Mellows is the 8-bit/folk punk/psychedelic pop golden child of the Tweaking Trays family, shamelessly including several of our contributors (coughMyselfcough), Kohwi (of Kohwi) playing the drums/doing the production, and Peter (Subvader) playing the Gameboy Classic/synths. It's 3 originals with artwork by James Green (our own Padre Zippo) and mastered by Zeljko McMullen (Wish). After a mild amount of deliberation, I'm quite pleased to say-

Also, Mellows has a string of east coast dates allllmost ready to announce, so keep your eyes peeled on our facetwitspaceblr lest we repost them on our blog like some self-indulgent pigs who like to masturbate in front of the mirror. Before brushing their teeth. Every night. Likewise, we've got a tumblr to show us what we eat for lunch every day on the road and perhaps something even more arbitrary. 

Candy Claws Fire

As you may have heard, Colorado's Candy Claws recent had their car caught in a fire while on tour in PA.  All of their equipment was totally destroyed.  Nobody was injured. and the car got fucked for realz.

Shit happens.  And shit certainly has happened to our beloved Candy Claws---  but that hasn't stopped them - For all that's happened to these guys, they couldn't possibly be more optimistic.  In an interview with exlaim.ca they said:


"We just two missed shows: Pittsburgh and DC...but really, it's been great. We got to hang out at a summer camp in PA, and a beautiful farmhouse with a lily pond and a forest and a giant Newfoundland named Jackson. They loaned us a van to get to NY. Here we are!"

So if there's one band in the world sounds like they're fucking troopers and can bear all after a crazy explosion fire car-go-boom AND still have an optimistic enough outlook to carry on w/ half a tour on borrowed equipment and a loaned van  --- that band is none other than candy claws.  We here at Tweaking Trays Incoproated LLC salute you.

Note: this is an especially big salute as we're trying to book our first Mellows tour outside of Michigan right now for the end of August, which requires a lot more effort than any of us had thought possible (yeah, we're finding out the hard way), and the Candy Claws mentality is nothing short of inspiring.

Pay special attention to the headbands (I heard they use their headbands for telekensis and other similar super powers)

PS. if you're just as amazed by their awesomeness as we are, Candy Claws' label, TwoSyllable, has set up a donation page for them where you can help these dudes out in getting the money to finance some new equipment, since yeah....all their old equipment got burned to the ground.

Fuck meteorology- given any outcome, we might as well prepare.

And no, I'm not talking about picking up that 10-strip from Ricky before seeing _________ Fest or pretending like you're going to have a job outside of food service.

I'm talking about rocking out some jams mid-cigarette while driving someone else's car. I'm talking about waking up to the same damn song every day sometime after 3 pm. I'm talking about that smug grin on your face while you check out summer skin with a pair of shitty headphones on.

The Mad Conductor - Members Only Single

Two well-traversed time bending enthusiasts, MC Devlin and MC Kinney give out some mad props to none other than KURT VONNEGUT. Somewhere between Billy Pilgrim and Bluebeard, MC Devlin spits a rude blend of off-kilter rhymes that humanize animals, euthanize virgins, and give you some nice music to get crunk to. I don't like get hung up on things, but these guys get me wet.

Lots of sweet news on the Tweaking front....


1.  Mellows @ UMMA!

Mellows will be performing @ UMMA (Univ. of Michigan Museum of Art) in the commons this Thursday at 8:00pm alongside local folk hero Nathan K.  The commons is the glassed in area facing the diag (not the glassed in area with the rotating art exhibit).  It's usually filled with tables and chairs, but those will be cleared out for the show.  The show is part of UMMA's monthly Third Thursday performance series.

2.  Subvader single to be released on Trenchant next month!

We've just gotten word from Trenchant Dubs that their compilation EP feat. Subvader's "Y'all Can't Handle Me" will be released sometime next month (April)...so mark your calendars.  Pete (subvader) has also been working diligently on finishing up the rest of the tracks for his Arctica EP, which is due to drop sometime this summer.

3.  Kohwi remixes Seams + more...

Introducing Tweaking's most recent addition to the crew:  I bring you Kohwi.

Unfortunately, the final product wasn't finished in time for it to go on Seams' Nightcycles + RMXS 12" release (set for April 26th on Tough Love Records), but if you subscribe to Seams' email list, you do get the Kohwi remix as a bonus free download.

Aside from the Nightcycles Remix, there are a couple other great tracks worth checking out if you head over to Kohwi's new and revamped myspace-home.  Future plans for Kohwi include a couple free singles TBA in the near future, and a stellar mixtape that should be hitting the tweaking site within the next two weeks.

4.  WCBN Fundraiser!

That's right.  We all here at tweaking sure as hell love WCBN, and from last Friday through next Sunday marks WCBN's official annual Fundraiser.  So remember, if you're a local, to proudly show your support  for your favorite 100% Volunteer Operated FREEFORM MAYHEM radio station.

On a personal note, I've got a special Fundraiser edition of DjDr Cornmuffin's Magical Mystery Hour lined up for Tomorrow/Tonight.  That's this Tuesday from 11pm-1am.  Should be a really great show, so be sure to tune in 88.3fm or stream it online!

Generative Art + Robot Koch + FUR + Mount Kimbie

Some great generative art photographs via But Does It Float.  Yet another art form that I wish I could find the time to dabble in, but all I end up doing is scrounging the web finding pictures and wishing I could do it myself.  'But Does It Float" is a visual art blog that I have really been digging recently. They often put up posts of incredible photos from a certain theme/medium along with strangely intriguing captions such as "Now we are aiming our technologies inward where they will start to merge with our minds, our memories, our metabolisms, our personalities, our progeny, and perhaps our souls", which is the title for this post.

I've had the the album Death Star Droid by Robot Koch for a good month or so now, and it's got a really unique blend of electronic, trip-hop, and even some dubstep elements in a few of their songs.  Think Ratatat meets Nosaj Thing for this track.

FUR is solo project of Bryce Isbell, whose debut full length, Witches, was just released on Waaga Records sometime last week.  Instrumental chill-wave with a smooth, retro synth textures, and an ethereal psychadelic beat that feels so on.  Lackadaisical is one of my favorite tracks on the album.

I can't remember what blog it was that I found Mount Kimbie on but that was another recent find of mine that really caught me by surprise.  Their track Maybes, off the 4-track EP by the same title, begins with a beautiful droney/ambient 3-chord guitar loop that fully kicks in after about a minute with a solid percussion / vocal sample based beat.





I'm actually working another track of Mount Kimbie's into my upcoming debut Mixtape which hopefully will be wrapping up sometime within the next week or two. --So stay tuned for more on that.  As of now most of my time is being spent working with the Mellows crew on recording their full length, which let me say...is already sounding pretty awesome.

BIG UPS TO TANYA FOR GETTN THIS TOGETHER! All acts were ILL.

The night started out with the funky fat beats of Andrew Meftah. His myspace has a modest collection of spaceage-Dilla-G Funk bangers. Live set was great (the dude has some SICK freestyle chops). FUNKY FRESH

Next was Drugstore Remedy--a psychadelic synth jam outfit. Although the recording quality isn't professional, the myspace has some jams on it to give you a flavor of their style. That being said, the recordings don't hold a candle to their impromptu live set. Can you say FLUID FRESH??

Amateur Anthropologist had a really high energy show! They said this was their first basement party--I'd say it was one of their best performances that I've seen. I still have "The Ocean" stuck in my head. Peep their myspace, get their new album and buy a t-shirt or three! We fucking love these guys. And they really got the place BUMPIN!!!!!

Mellows' played their hearts out. They ended the night perfectly. Check their myspace to grab their free demo EP. They're scheduled to begin recording their first LP next week.
