Stryker Remixes Subvader

I'm realllllyyyyy excited to announce that my new ep entitled 'Riding the Night - EP' will be released this Tuesday!! Super dooper stoked about this 3-track release... it really doesn't sound much like my last EP at all (in a good way, i hope :) You will be able to pick it up for free on soundcloud, and bandcamp (which has unlimited downloads in any file format) on the 17th.

So yeah, I've been asking various producer friends to see if they want to remix the last track on the album entitled 'Now We Leave Ground.' So far, the remixes are looking DOPE--got some really talented producers (Young Tom, anyone?)

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Stryker Matthews, prepare to be blown away. This californian adds a Diplo-esque flair to the original, cultivating a really energetic/rowdy vibe.

Mellows is the 8-bit/folk punk/psychedelic pop golden child of the Tweaking Trays family, shamelessly including several of our contributors (coughMyselfcough), Kohwi (of Kohwi) playing the drums/doing the production, and Peter (Subvader) playing the Gameboy Classic/synths. It's 3 originals with artwork by James Green (our own Padre Zippo) and mastered by Zeljko McMullen (Wish). After a mild amount of deliberation, I'm quite pleased to say-

Today is a special day my friends, a special day indeed....but no, I'm not talking about getting your 'world cup nut' for the 7th day in a row (although if you'd like to read this post in true world cup fashion, be our guest)

Today we welcome our good friend Jeremy M. aboard the S.S. Tweaking.  You may know J-doggg via his stellar remixes of Yeah Yeah Yeah's or Crystal Castles under the Moniker Professor Purple.  But what you probably don't know is that he makes his turntables blow up....literally (see photo above).

Currently Jeremy's out in Pittsburgh for the warmer months, but will be back in the lovely Ann Arbor come September.  In the meantime, he's heading abroad to europe for a bit, so be on the look out for his debut post from across the oh so beautiful ocean in the coming week or so.

See below for the Prof's killer rmx of Crystal Castle's Celestica, as well as a previously unreleased track from his solo tapey-beat/electronic music project Chrome Sparks (a beautiful mesh of blogorific hazyjamz with the high fidelity perfection of a chinaman) Jeremy's also currently working on finishing up a Chrome Sparks EP to be released via Tweaking later this summer...and we couldn't be more stoked.

Subvader remixes Kavinsky

Our very own resident 'womperman' SUBVADER has just given us the link to a new track and we're goin gaga for it!

Nightcall (Subvader Remix)

The vader-meister has gone all out on this deep, deep, vastly deep track, showing us that there's (a shit-ton) more to dubstep than a melody-less, wobbly 'WAMP WAMP.' He retains a similar melody to the original but then takes it to some otherworldly space odyssey shit. After listening to it, I feel like I'm in a rave in deepspace where we're kinda floatin around in astro suits outside the starcraft and i just took a hit of DMT. Please crank your speakers when listening to it, and if possible, take some drugs (preferably hallucinogens).

Kohwi - Blindlights Mix

So this is a mix that I started at least a few months back, but it had to take a back seat to some more pressing projects for a while.  School ended, I found myself with some more free time on my hands, and finally got around to finishing this little set.

Today I bring you Tweaking Trays' second mixtape: Kohwi - Blindlights Mix.

A 30-minute set that strives for variety similar to that of a freeform radio show ala my weekly bit on WCBN here in Ann Arbor.  These are all tracks that have really hit me hard over the past year, mostly recent stuff, but there's also some songs that are a little older, tracks that I've recently discovered, or tunes that I just feel never got enough love.  So get yourself in bed, turn on some trippy mood lighting, crank this through your A grade studio headphones, and enjoy the BlindLights.

subvasion!! subvader single!

Subvader's 1st single, 'Y'all Can't Handle Me,' just got released! Heard it in a mix by some dubstem forum's dj's show and thought it was pretty wicked. I like when the dj's all like 'whoo-o-o-oahh phaze mann!'

The other songs on the Bloodlines EP are awesome. I seriously love the chillstep vibes-->great for coolin ya down in the summer heat! EDS, J Courage and Aquadrop are awesome, very creative producers.
You can buy it on iTunes, Beatport, Amazon, among some others. All Subvader's other music will be given away for free.

Speaking of, his ep is soon to come out! all 4 tracks are done and mastered and ready to be sent out! Stay tuned!!

Tweaking Trays brings you our 1st single!!

Our favorite knob-twister Kohwi just finalized his first single release with "The Otter Twice." We could not be more excited to bring you this work that incorporates field recordings, glitched loops, and guitar drones. These techniques combine to form a chaotic mesh that slowly dissipates and evolves into a bed of warm synthetic textures and a driving backbeat that carries the song through to the end.  Kohwi is currently working on his debut full length (as of yet, untitled) which is due to drop sometime in late summer / early fall 2010.

News on the Tweaking Horizon!

Don't know what's going on wherever you are, but the weather in Ann Arbor has gotten soo nice recently.....I think we can say it's spring?

Lots of sweet news on the Tweaking front....


1.  Mellows @ UMMA!

Mellows will be performing @ UMMA (Univ. of Michigan Museum of Art) in the commons this Thursday at 8:00pm alongside local folk hero Nathan K.  The commons is the glassed in area facing the diag (not the glassed in area with the rotating art exhibit).  It's usually filled with tables and chairs, but those will be cleared out for the show.  The show is part of UMMA's monthly Third Thursday performance series.

2.  Subvader single to be released on Trenchant next month!

We've just gotten word from Trenchant Dubs that their compilation EP feat. Subvader's "Y'all Can't Handle Me" will be released sometime next month (April)...so mark your calendars.  Pete (subvader) has also been working diligently on finishing up the rest of the tracks for his Arctica EP, which is due to drop sometime this summer.

3.  Kohwi remixes Seams + more...

Introducing Tweaking's most recent addition to the crew:  I bring you Kohwi.

Unfortunately, the final product wasn't finished in time for it to go on Seams' Nightcycles + RMXS 12" release (set for April 26th on Tough Love Records), but if you subscribe to Seams' email list, you do get the Kohwi remix as a bonus free download.

Aside from the Nightcycles Remix, there are a couple other great tracks worth checking out if you head over to Kohwi's new and revamped myspace-home.  Future plans for Kohwi include a couple free singles TBA in the near future, and a stellar mixtape that should be hitting the tweaking site within the next two weeks.

4.  WCBN Fundraiser!

That's right.  We all here at tweaking sure as hell love WCBN, and from last Friday through next Sunday marks WCBN's official annual Fundraiser.  So remember, if you're a local, to proudly show your support  for your favorite 100% Volunteer Operated FREEFORM MAYHEM radio station.

On a personal note, I've got a special Fundraiser edition of DjDr Cornmuffin's Magical Mystery Hour lined up for Tomorrow/Tonight.  That's this Tuesday from 11pm-1am.  Should be a really great show, so be sure to tune in 88.3fm or stream it online!

BIG UPS TO TANYA FOR GETTN THIS TOGETHER! All acts were ILL.

The night started out with the funky fat beats of Andrew Meftah. His myspace has a modest collection of spaceage-Dilla-G Funk bangers. Live set was great (the dude has some SICK freestyle chops). FUNKY FRESH

Next was Drugstore Remedy--a psychadelic synth jam outfit. Although the recording quality isn't professional, the myspace has some jams on it to give you a flavor of their style. That being said, the recordings don't hold a candle to their impromptu live set. Can you say FLUID FRESH??

Amateur Anthropologist had a really high energy show! They said this was their first basement party--I'd say it was one of their best performances that I've seen. I still have "The Ocean" stuck in my head. Peep their myspace, get their new album and buy a t-shirt or three! We fucking love these guys. And they really got the place BUMPIN!!!!!

Mellows' played their hearts out. They ended the night perfectly. Check their myspace to grab their free demo EP. They're scheduled to begin recording their first LP next week.

FEB FANTASTIC 2010 MIXTAPE RELEASE!!!

Tweaking Trays' very own Subvader just sent us his new mixtape. We're really fucking excited about it, not just because it's fucking sweet and full of bangers, but because this is our first official release from the Tweaking Trays family. Some things he wanted to say about it:

"Even though the tracks aren't all new releases or very eclectic, this is a mix of songs that I love and that fit together pretty musically. I wanted to make something that expressed a lot of the different styles of dance music that I like, so I featured everything from synthpop to dubstep."

Subvader--also known as Peter Wiley--is making his debut on Chicago's Trenchant Recordings. His song "Ya'll Can't Handle Me" will appear on their upcoming digital compilation release. We'll be sure to keep you posted!
